Leonard Rawlins – Interview
Today I am honored to present this interview with South African author Leonard Rawlins. The author of the novel and soon to be Hollywood Motion Picture “Guns Of Justice”
Good Morning Leonard,I’d like to start with this question. What does your writing process look like?
I don’t have any particular writing process that I go through before I start writing, or during the process of me capturing my thoughts on paper.
Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?
I don’t know if one could call it strange, there might be plenty of other Authors or writers who do the same. Once I start writing, I write for hours at end without taking a break.
Is there one book you have written that is your favorite? Which of your characters is your favorite? And which is the biggest trouble maker for you?
Yes, my favorite novel that I’ve written, is Guns of Justice. My favorite character is Jake Hudson, while the biggest trouble maker is Tex Burrows, leader of the Outlaw gang. He’s a real bad-ass.
Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you to write?
Authors who have been an inspiration to my passion for writing, are Wilbur Smith and John Grisham. They are also my favorite Authors.
If Leonard Rawlins could cast the characters from his latest book in the Hollywood adaptation who would play your characters?
Funny you should mention that. My novel, Guns of Justice, has just been rewritten by me into a screen script by demand from an Agent in Hollywood. If I could cast the characters, I’d choose Josh Duhamel to play the role of Jake Hudson,
and Jessica Biel in the role as Ronnie.
The bad-ass, Tex Burrows, would be played by Mark Ruffalo
or Channing Tatum.
How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?
Names are what structures a good books. I don’t base my names on liking the way they sound, or on the meaning of the name. I don’t use any resources in choosing names for my characters.
What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?
There are many things that I’ve accomplished during my lifetime which I’m proud of, but I’d say that my best accomplishment is to be able to write a good story in an intriguing manner.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully, if all goes well, as a very well-known screenwriter for Hollywood.
Were you already a great writer? Have you always like to write?
Yes, writing has been my passion ever since I can remember.
What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?
Never give up when you feel disappointed or hurt by critique which people like to dish out freely. You will find that negative and hurtful critique mostly come from people who have no idea of what it takes to write a book.
If you didn’t like writing books, what would you do for a living?
Most probably what I do in my free time, I do oil painting and pencil sketching of Wild Life.
Are you a plotter or a pantster? (Write by the seat of your pants)
I never ever plot anything before I write. Plotting doesn’t work for me. It feels like the words flow from my fingers (I let my fingers do the walking on the keyboard)
Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you have any advice on how to deal with the bad?
Yes, I enjoy reading the reviews I get, and I always try to respond to all of them. I don’t bother with reviews that are out to attack me on a personal level.
What is your best marketing tip?
Use all the Social Websites for your marketing, and PERSEVERE. That’s the main ingredient in achieving success, and PATIENCE. Building a sound foundation takes time.
What is your least favorite part of the publishing / writing process?
There’s no part that I dislike. The only thing which is more difficult when you first start out, is the marketing.
Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?
Yes, there are two subjects in fact. The first one is Sci-Fi, and the other is Adult (Young Adult)
In Guns of Justice who is your favorite character?
Jake Hudson is my favorite character in Guns of Justice.
Is there a certain type of scene that’s harder for you to write than others? Love? Action? Racy?
No scene is harder, or more difficult to write about than another. It’s all about getting one’s head straight (mind over matter), and then focusing on the task at hand.
Leonard what is your latest book? How many books have you written prior?
My latest book is a Crime Thriller, entitled A Time to Die. I have two books published so far, apart from my other novels which I’m currently working on.
What are you working on now? What is your next project?
Currently I’m busy with a true story, based on actual events, which is nearly completed. At the same time, I also have three other projects going, one of which is the sequel to my first novel, Guns of Justice.
The following are some Crazy Questions That No One Ever Asks Authors. (Well except for me that is)
What has been your biggest disappointment in life?
My biggest disappointment is realizing that my first novel, Guns of Justice, isn’t selling as good as I’d hoped, and that it’s not receiving as many reviews as I’d hoped it would.
What is your greatest joy in life?
My greatest joy in life is hearing that people enjoy reading my books. It inspires me.
Characters often find themselves in situations they aren’t sure they can get themselves out of. When was the last time you found yourself in a situation that was hard to get out of and what did you do?
I was left without a steady income in August 2013, and am still unemployed and unable to find a steady income to sustain myself and my wife. I have since then, decided to put everything I have(energy and drive), into being a successful Author.
What is your biggest fear?
That I might never be a successful Author.
What do you want your tombstone to say?
“He had a lot to write about, yet nobody would read it.”
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
What literary character is most like you?
I don’t define myself as being like others.
What secret talents do you have?
I use each and every talent which I am blessed with and am capable of doing. No secrets there.
Where is one place you want to visit that you haven’t been before?
I’ve never been to the USA before, and would love to go there. It’s a country filled with so much History, and there’s so much to see.
If you were an animal in a zoo, what would you be?
A Bengal Tiger.
Do you dream? Do you have any recurring dreams/nightmares?
I dream, yes. Fortunately I don’t have dreams that haunt me, or recurring dreams.
